Winter Lecture Programme

The 2008/9 Winter Lecture Programme is held at the Courtlands Hotel, Hove.
Non members are welcome on paying £2 at the door
Times vary so please note each lecture time

Thursday 16th October at 2.30 p.m.


Duncan McNeill - photographer, architect and Hove's first Conservation Officer will give an introduction to the photographs of  the"James Gray Collection". Many of these are now held by the Regency Society and available on their website.

Thursday 13th November at 7 p.m.


Laton Frewen -
from the National Trust, will talk about "Ellen Terry of Smallhythe Place" and the life of this popular Victorian
                         actress at her Sussex home.

Thursday 11th December at 2.30 p.m.


Sue Berry - a well known Sussex historian, speaker and author, will talk on "The Churches and Chapels of Hove" and the
                   recent research into their histories.

Thursday 29th January at 7 p.m.


Michael Smith - a local lecturer with wide interests including history, literature, conservation and geology will talk about
                        "The Bayeux Tapestry."  More than half the scenes depicted in the Tapestry took place in Sussex.

Thursday 19th February at 2.30 p.m.


Marilyn Greatorex
- A National Trust Speaker, will talk on "The Beales of Standen" - everyday life at the end of the 19th
                               century in this well-to-do household

Thursday 19th March at 7 p.m.


Trevor Povey - a local historian with a sense of humour! will speak on "Vernacular Buildings."  Historical methods of building,
                        with local examples.
