Planning Comment July 08
Conservation Advisory Group Meeting,
8 July 2008
Application BH2008/01369.
35 Lower Market Street, Hove.
"Demolition of existing two storey rear extension and construction of replacement two storey extension. Replacement sash windows to front elevation including removal of ground floor bay window".
HCS recommended Approval of the replacement rear extension, on a like-for-like basis, but CAG chose to remain silent on the rear extension pending submission by the applicant of an acceptable proposal for a replacement to the ground-floor front bay-window (which like the other windows has been removed prior to Planning Permission being granted).
Conservation Advisory Group Meeting,
29 July 2008
Application BH2008/01691.
Rear of 70 Brunswick Place, Hove.
"New single storey Eco Home in location of existing double garage (facing Lansdowne Road). Re-submission".
HCS recommended Refusal on the grounds that it would be inappropriate to site a one-room modern dwelling within the green space between two listed, signature Regency terraces in a Conservation Area. HCS moreover queried the developers` claim that there would be protection for the fig-tree and the semi-mature Sycamore tree overhanging the East and West sides of the site. HCS was concerned that even the apple tree a few feet further away from the site might not survive the proposed construction.
CAG recommended Refusal.
Application BH2008/01033
Peace Statue Toilet Block, Brunswick Lawns, Kings Esplanade, Hove. BRUNSWICK TOWN CONSERVATION AREA.
"Conversion of vacant underground public toilets into new clubhouse and storage area for Brighton and Hove Petanque Club".
HCS recommended Approval, and warmly welcomed this proposal to create a useful new civic amenity from underground space which has been disused since the toilets had to be closed because of persistent vandalism over 15 years ago.
CAG recommended Approval.
