Conservation Advisory Group Meeting
13 January 2009
Application BH2008/03783
17-19 Holland Mews
"Construction of a terrace of 3 three storey, two bedroom houses, with garages and bicycle stores".
CAG had considered the original version of this application in February 2008, which despite CAG`s support was turned down. Points of contention have meanwhile been addressed, e.g. the issue of potential noise disturbance and the overlooking of neighbours (the current proposal drops the original plans to have balconies at both front and rear). Both HCS and CAG accepted that the current proposal achieves "a balance between contemporary architecture and the vernacular language of a traditional mews set in a conservation area". Both HCS and CAG recommended Approval.
Application BH2008/03565
38-39 Brunswick Terrace
"Installation of tiling to existing stone steps and landing".
HCS was in favour of recommending Approval of this, subject to a stipulation that the tiling be as recommended by the Design and Conservation Team, i.e. matching that at 40 Brunswick Terrace (black and white diamond pattern with border detailing and marble nosings to the steps). CAG, however, preferred that the existing stone-slab finish be refurbished on a like-for-like basis and recommended accordingly that the application be Refused.
Application BH2008/03632
Flat 3, 17 Brunswick Terrace
"Replacement of existing metal-framed windows with traditional box sashes".
Both HCS and CAG welcomed this initiative, which seeks to replace unattractive and incongruous metal-framed windows with a traditional timber-framed sash alternative matching existing windows on the same rear elevation of the Grade 1 Listed Building. English Heritage has no objection to the proposal and CAG was happy to recommend Approval.
