Visit to Polesden Lacey
Trip to Polesden Lacey and Stratfield Saye
As Worthing Coaches had given us a very early start time we
decided to stop at Denbies, near Dorking, for a coffee and a perusal of their
very nice shop, on the way to Polesden Lacey where we arrived soon after 11. We had plenty of time to wander round this
extremely attractive house in a lovely setting. The differently styled rooms gave us an idea of the social
history of the first half of the 20th century. The guides in all the rooms were most
helpful and knowledgeable. The Nation Trust restaurant provided a good range of
snacks and lunch.
We were warmly greeted at Stratfield Saye by staff members
where we were divided into two groups to have a guided tour of the ground floor. It is a most homely house and evidence of
family living was everywhere and, again, a fascinating look into 19th
century living of the Wellesley family was revealed in each room. The Print Room was especially interesting
and the dining room most attractive.
All in all a good day, despite the inclement weather and
rather a lot of walking!
