The Bandstand
The
bandstand was built in 1884 on the lower esplanade virtually on the
border of Brighton and Hove. Built in cast iron it is a listed building
and is now in a sad state of disrepair and in urgent need of attention.
In
2004 the Council, which has responsibility for its maintenance,
appointed architects to investigate the structure and estimate the
costs involved in renovation. This estimate was in the region of
£250,000.
The key question before this level of expenditure is
undertaken is its future use but surely even just as an icon of
Victorian ingenuity it deserves not to decay any further.
In the mean-time another year has passed with yet more deterioration.
Come on council, make a decision and do something
April 2007
The re-submitted bid for money from the National Lottery for restoration has been delayed again. The earliest the Council will know is now September as the Heritage Lottery Fund feel they need the extra time to come to a decision. The new plans include a linkway to the upper level of the two storey structure and a cafe in the lower half. The council have monies set aside but it seems that yet another year will go by before any movement is made to start work.
Is it ever going to happen?
September 2007
The answer to the above question is "yes" The Council has now confirmed that the work will go ahead but it may not be completed until 2009
