St.Ann`s Well Gardens
St Ann's Well Gardens celebrated its 100th birthday (i.e. as a public park rather than private estate) on 23 May 2008. To celebrate this, on Saturday 24 May the park hosted a lively and varied event as part of the Brighton Festival Fringe, including the screening of short films made in the park by George Albert Smith (who here in Hove pioneered colour film photography and the fundamental film-making techniques of editing and the close-up). The event was organised by the Friends of St Ann's Well Gardens. More details can be found on their website www.stannswellgardens.co.uk
The park won another 'Green Flag' this year, a prestigious national award for parks and open spaces.
The 25 minute film "A Play in Time", directed by Susan Trangmar, is being shown at Brighton Museum (South Balcony) daily from Sat 20 Sept to Sun 16 Nov, 2008. The film is an intimate study of St. Ann`s Well Gardens, recording seasonal changes and the informal activities of the people who use the park. The piece was commissioned by Photoworks in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council. FREE ADMISSION.
